  • New York Times Op-Ed Shrouded in Mystery as President Trump Desperately Tries to Find Writer

U.S. President Donald Trump dismissed as a "gutless coward" on Thursday the author of an anonymous New York Times op-ed that said there's a resistance inside his administration.

Pompeo said it "shouldn't surprise anyone" that the New York Times chose to print "such a piece" and if the piece actually was written by a top United States official the outlet "should not have chosen to take a disgruntled, deceptive, bad actor's word for anything".

"President Trump got elected, and these other people did not".

However, allegations that Mattis is intervening regularly to avert national security disasters have once again raised the question of whether military commanders possess the authority to refuse a direct order from the President under certain circumstances.

John Dowd, the former White House legal counsel, allegedly told Robert Mueller, who is leading the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, that he did not want the president to testify because he would embarrass himself and the country. "This is just another example of the liberal media's concerted effort to discredit the President", White House Press Secretary Sanders said.

"If a person is bold enough to accuse people of negative actions, they have a responsibility to publicly stand by their words and people have the right to be able to defend themselves", she said. For example, a Trump tweet about the Korean crisis alarmed the Pentagon, the author said.

The Times essay was published a day after the release of details from an explosive new book by longtime journalist Bob Woodward that laid bare concerns among Trump aides about the president's judgment.

Several Cabinet members, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, have denied they wrote the piece.

The Vice President puts his name on his Op-Eds.

"While I generally enjoy reading fiction, this is a uniquely Washington brand of literature, and his anonymous sources do not lend credibility", the defence secretary had said.

Such a declaration from the "U.S. commander in chief on Twitter was nearly unthinkable" and Pentagon leadership anxious that such a tweet would provoke North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Woodward wrote.

"It probably won't take long for us to find out who wrote it".

Adding to Trump's list of heavyweight opponents, former president Barack Obama delivered a speech in IL on Friday that eviscerated Trump by name over their clashing worldviews, putting the current president on notice that his predecessor has shed his restrained public profile in a bid to directly engage him.

As the plot thickened in an already over-the-top administration, Trump allies and political insiders joined the mad scramble to unmask the writer. He added that Woodward's tome is a "big, fat ugly book with all the misquotes and all the lies".
