Woodward: Mattis, Kelly denials of his book quotes untrue

  • She didn't come to me. And she should have come to me' Trump said of Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway during a conversation with Bob Woodward about an interview request Trump claims he never was told about

President Donald Trump is keeping up his end of Fear author Bob Woodward's book promotion campaign, writing at least five tweets this morning that directly reference the book - and a few that seem at least spurred by the upcoming September 11 publication.

In his book Fear, which comes out Tuesday, Woodward describes Trump behaving erratically and impulsively, even on significant issues of national security, and insulting some of his senior officials.

Woodward, whose 1974 reporting of the Watergate case in the Washington Post led to President Richard Nixon's resignation, said he based his book "Fear" on interviews with witnesses to the hidden secrets of the White House, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"Fear: Trump in the White House" hits USA bookstores on Tuesday after a weeklong buildup, with published excerpts, leaks and interviews that portray Trump as dangerously erratic and uninformed.

Trump tweeted Monday that he has been subjected to "Phony books, articles and T.V. "hits" like no other pol has had to endure".

The book has already risen to No. 1 on Amazon's best-seller list, but Trump said the longtime Washington Post reporter and editor used "now disproven unnamed and anonymous sources".

Sanders fired back: "I think we would say that it's about as ridiculous as most of Bob Woodward's book". Democrats can't stand losing.

It would not surprise me if President Trump himself wrote the op-ed just to shine the light on someone else and blame the "fake news" and blame the "deep state".

In the book, Kelly is quoted as saying of Trump: "He's an idiot".

Earlier in the day, Woodward appeared on NBC's "Today" show, where he said that Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly "are not telling the truth" when they deny making disparaging statements about President Donald Trump attributed to them in his new book, "Fear".

"We are in Crazytown", Kelly is quoted as telling a small group of confidants. "I don't talk the way I am quoted". One of the most unsafe incidents involved Trump's obsession with the 28,000 troops the US has stationed in South Korea, and the $3.5 billion a year the USA pays to keep them there, Woodward explained, quoting Trump as saying: "I don't know why they're there".

The White House last week called Woodward's new book "nothing more than fabricated stories".

In the normal practice of journalism, it's considered to be the job of a newspaper's own reporters, not anonymous government officials, to report on newsworthy political revelations, especially those with momentous implications. None of these terms existed prior to Mr. Trump so one can say he created them in order to justify his campaign?

He argued that the person purposely put the piece in the Times to anger him, and he has continued to focus on identifying and firing the author, even as some advisers have urged him to let the matter go, said a person familiar with the president's thinking but not authorized to discuss private conversations.

But he said his book "is as carefully done as you can do an excavation of the reality of what goes on" in the Trump White House.
