Brett Kavanaugh: Key senators back Trump's embattled Supreme Court pick

  • Democratic senator suggests FBI uncovered evidence Brett Kavanaugh lied under oath as final vote looms

Deborah Ramirez says the Senate is "looking the other way" when it comes to her accusation that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh exposed himself to her when they were students at Yale.

In an interview with The Washington Post ahead of Kavanaugh's near-certain confirmation on Saturday afternoon, the Kentucky Republican again underscored his confidence in Kavanaugh's innocence while decrying the "mob" of protesters who had descended on GOP senators.

Eleven Democrats voted for Thomas, while two Republicans opposed his confirmation.

West Virginia's Joe Manchin is also planning to vote yes on Kavanaugh-the only Democrat to do so. John Cornyn, the Senate's No. 2 Republican who has been aggressively lobbying undecided senators to vote for Kavanaugh, also came over and touched Murkowski on the shoulder as they spoke.

"Our Supreme Court confirmation process has been in steady decline for more than 30 years", Collins said.

She praised his judicial record and argued there was no corroboration of sexual assault charges made against him by psychology professor Christine Blasey Ford.

Despite her opposition to Kavanaugh, Murkowski ultimately withdrew herself from the final tally as a gesture of goodwill toward her Republican colleague, Sen.

Manchin said he had reservations about Kavanaugh because of the sexual misconduct allegations against him "and the temperament he displayed in the hearing".

An M for an M, if you will. Manchin, who faces a tough reelection campaign in a state that overwhelmingly favors Kavanaugh, will most likely be a "Yes" vote on Saturday.

In the pivotal moment on Friday, Mrs Collins, perhaps the chamber's most moderate Republican, proclaimed her support for Mr Kavanaugh at the end of a Senate floor speech that lasted almost 45 minutes.

Mr Trump and his fellow Republicans said the new Federal Bureau of Investigation report had cleared their nominee. "I believe he is a good man, it just may be that in my view he is not the right man for the court at this time", she added.

Melania (meh-LAH'-nee-ah) Trump is offering some supportive words for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

The Friday cloture vote limits further debate and Democrats' ability to filibuster the final vote. Some wore shirts that said "Confirm Kavanaugh Now", and "I stand with Brett", while others had buttons that said, "Believe Survivors". However, some Republicans were concerned that Flake would change his mind, since he had called for a delay in the vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation to allow the FBI to conduct a brief investigation into the allegations against the judge.

Susan Rice, national security adviser to President Barack Obama, tweeted she would consider challenging Collins in 2020, saying she was deeply disappointed in Collins' vote.
