As George Kassimeris explains, the event has been dominated by divisions in the party over Brexit, with many observers predicting this could be May's last conference speech as prime minister.

He said it had been voted by a big majority of the people on both sides of the Border.

It was a warm welcome for a leader whose fragile position at the helm of her party has come under further pressure after the European Union rejected parts of her so-called Chequers plan and critics stepped up calls for her to ditch her strategy on Brexit, Britain's most far-reaching policy shift for more than 40 years.

It was seen as a crucial moment for her as she faces mounting criticism over stalled Brexit negotiations, with senior party figures calling for her to change her plans. Northern Ireland has had no functioning government for almost two years, preventing the Assembly from sitting.

After a recent lull in the Brexit talks, officials are hoping the government comes to the table with new proposals on solving the Irish border question, ahead a crunch summit in mid-October.

May defended her Brexit blueprint, which aims to keep Britain aligned with many European Union rules in return for remaining in the bloc's single market for goods.

The Prime Minister, who banished memories of her disastrous conference speech a year ago by shimmying on stage to the tune of Abba's Dancing Queen, sought to turn some of the political spotlight onto her domestic agenda.

And yet Ms. May has managed to defy the skeptics with a vigorous appeal to the party faithful on Wednesday that has rallied support for her leadership and diffused attacks on her Brexit plan, even though that plan remains widely unpopular and could yet unravel. "For the first time in decades, it will be this country that controls and chooses who we want to come here", May said in a statement.

'He wants to tear up our guarantee to the people of Northern Ireland.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, she said, would "outsource our conscience to the Kremlin".

However, she conceded that immigration policy could be affected by Britain's future trade deals.

May and her team face weeks of hard conversations with Brussels, especially after Hunt offended some in the bloc by comparing the EU to the old Soviet Union in asserting that the EU was trying to "punish" any member seeking to leave it. "Her strategy is to make pleasing noises yet say very little of substance, keeping the country in a holding position until her final betrayal is unveiled at the eleventh hour".

The region, which is part of the United Kingdom, has an open land border with the Republic of Ireland as part of the 20-year-old Good Friday Agreement that ended decades of sectarian violence.

"Because the plan the European Union has put forward is one that effectively keeps Northern Ireland in the customs union and ensures that effectively there is a customs border down the Irish sea".

In her closing speech to the Conservative Party's annual conference in Birmingham, central England, May will address accusations of a lack of confidence in Britain's future.
