China confirms detention of ex-Interpol chief Meng Hongwei

  • Grace Meng told journalists that she thought the knife emoji meant her husband was in danger

The wife of Meng Hongwei, 64, had earlier expressed fears for his safety when he failed to return from a trip to France, where Interpol, the global police organisation, is based.

Beijing announced Monday the Chinese head of Interpol, who vanished after returning to his homeland, was under investigation for possible criminal activity, and the world police organisation said he had resigned. It did not say why.

Beijing has yet to comment on the 64-year-old security official's disappearance but French police investigating his disappearance have placed his family under special protection.

The Communist Party's corruption unit said Mr Meng, who is also China's vice minister of public security, is "suspected of violating the law and is now under the monitoring and investigation" of the body.

South Korean national Kim Jong Yang has been appointed acting president ahead of a new leadership election in November.

Paris - Interpol says it has received the resignation of Meng Hongwei, the Chinese president of the worldwide police organization who went missing one week ago.

This photo shows the last message sent by Meng Hongwei to his wife, Grace Meng. She says he sent an image of knife that day, she thinks as a warning he was in danger.

Meng had lived with his wife and two children in France since being elected Interpol president in 2016.

Meng's wife had suspected danger to her husband's life after she revealed that he sent her an image of a knife before he disappeared. She says four minutes before Meng shared the image, he had sent a message saying, "Wait for my call".

But the call never came, she said, adding that she did not what happened to her husband.

"As long as I can't see my husband in front of me, speaking to me, I can't have any confidence", Grace Meng was quoted as saying by French TV stations and Sunday newspapers.

Local French media reported that Mr Meng's wife had issued a brief statement from a hotel in Lyon, in which she expressed her concerns over the situation.

According to Interpol's website, Meng has almost 40 years of experience in criminal justice and policing, and has overseen matters related to legal institutions, narcotics control and counterterrorism.

He had been on a three-country tour, to Norway, Sweden and Serbia, for Interpol before his latest trip back to China, she said.

"From now on, I have gone from sorrow and fear to the pursuit of truth, justice and responsibility toward history", she said.

Meng's vanishing act bears hallmarks of what happens to senior officials when they are suspected of violating party rules, usually alleged corruption. "If what Meng is involved in is nothing more than an ordinary corruption case, there would have been no need for the authorities to handle it in such a manner", he said.
