  • A crest fallen Gerard Pique gifts Leganes the lead

Bottom club, Leganes stunned Barcelona with a 2-1 win in the Spanish league yesterday, handing the defending champions their second straight setback, AP reports.

Lionel Messi couldn't add to his 595 goals in his 700th appearance with Barcelona, including 55 non-official games.

The Premier League outfit host Barca at Wembley on Wednesday, needing a win after losing their Group B opener to Inter.

Luis Suarez warned his Barcelona team-mates they can not afford to keep relying on Lionel Messi to solve everything after a 1-1 draw at home to Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

"I believed that Leo and Busquets had to rest because we have a very complicated match on Wednesday", Valverde said.

"I knew it was a risky decision, but if it had gone well, you wouldn't be asking me about it".

Since joining Leganes from Real Madrid on a loan deal, Oscar Rodriguez has already made 3 appearances for them, who - despite their victory against FC Barcelona - are 19th on the point table.

"We thought that this was the moment to rest Messi", said the manager's number two Jon Aspiazu.

"We have the squad and the players to be a great team, to be a strong team and not depend on anyone".

Barca won their first four games in the league this season but have now dropped seven points in just six days, spanning three games. We didn't create the chances we'd have liked.

Oscar Rodriguez, a former member of Real Madrid's youth teams, who is on loan with Leganes, took advantage of Pique's uncharacteristic mistake to score the 53rd-minute victor.

"Last year we hardly conceded goals but now teams are scoring against us with their first attempt".

"But there are things that I think we can improve, above all, our offensive balance". We have to get better'.
