  • Google's Project Stream lets you play Assassin's Creed Odyssey in Chrome

This is Google's game streaming technology which it has been working on for some time now, trying to face down the challenges which it claims form the "next technical frontier for streaming", and will be much more demanding than pre-recorded video.

While many of us are undoubtedly used to streaming films, television shows, and music, streaming blockbuster games is a task that hasn't necessarily been brought to the mainstream as of yet.

The real sticking point for any game streaming service is input latency, and it's the problem has to be solved before game streaming can go mainstream.

Many companies have tried to make game streaming a reality, but up until now, none of them have managed to catch on, with most failing altogether.

The beta is supposed to push the limits of what Project Stream can do with AAA titles from top tier gaming companies. Google notes that open spots are limited, and there's no guarantee of selection. You'll need a "reliable" internet connection - Google recommends at least 25Mbps - Google and Ubisoft accounts, and a desktop or laptop computer with Chrome version 69 or higher installed.

Improvements in internet bandwidth, computing power and data storage capabilities are enabling "disruptive technologies" such as streaming which have the potential to change the way games are created as well as played, according to Ubisoft. "Only a select few will be participating in Project Stream, but everyone can experience the journey of either Alexios or Kassandra when Assassin's Creed Odyssey launches October 5 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC". It's also only limited to users aged over 17 years, and those who live in the United States.

In their own words, here is Google describing the massive scope of Project Stream.
