Google to shut down Google

  • You get extra points if you remembered that Google+ was still a thing

We discovered and immediately patched this bug in March 2018. "The consumer version of Google+ now has low usage and engagement: 90 percent of Google+ user sessions are less than five seconds". "Given these challenges and the very low usage of the consumer version of Google+, we made a decision to sunset the consumer version of Google+".

Google said it was unable to confirm which accounts were affected by the bug, but an analysis indicated it could have been as many as 500,000 Google+ accounts. This bug could allow a user's installed apps to utilize the API and access non-public information belonging to that user's friends.

These latest changes are also being implemented as part of a larger crackdown, in which the search giant is seeking to review and curb "third-party developer access to Google account and Android device data and of our philosophy around apps' data access".

The bug was discovered in one of the Google+ application programming interfaces (APIs) when the company conducted an audit of third party developer access to Google accounts and Android data, in a project called Project Strobe.

"'We have many enterprise customers who are finding great value in using Google+ within their companies", the internet firm said. "That means we can not confirm which users were impacted by this bug".

"To give people a full opportunity to transition, we will implement this wind-down over a 10-month period, slated for completion by the end of next August", said Ben Smith, Google's Vice President of Engineering.

Interestingly, the aforementioned WSJ report says that Google's legal and policy staff sent a memo to senior executives warning that disclosing the bug would probably result in "immediate regulatory interest".

Google exposed the data of hundreds thousands of Google+ users due to a faulty API, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. Despite this, they still plan to shut down Google+, providing people the next ten months to migrate their personal information.

"The Data Protection commission was not aware of this issue and we now need to better understand the details of the breach, including the nature, impact and risk to individuals and we will be seeking information on these issues from Google", it said.

The data involved was limited to optional profile fields, including name, age, gender, occupation and email addresses, and posts, messages or telephone numbers could not be accessed, a spokesperson said.
