Trump has now put his stamp on the court with his second justice in as many years. "Big day for America!" he tweeted.

"I believe his words and judicial philosophy are what every member of the Senate, Republican or Democrat, should require from their nominee". They said he also seemed ready to rule for Trump if federal authorities probing his 2016 campaign's alleged connections to Russian Federation try to pursue him in court. Thank you for hearing us.

While the official vote isn't expected until Saturday, Kavanaugh now has a clear path to a lifetime appointment on the highest court in the land, despite the sexual misconduct allegations that have been brought against him by Christine Blasey Ford and two other women.

Additionally, Ford's lawyer responded to President Donald Trump's comments at a campaign rally earlier this week where he had appeared to mock her testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Exactly one month from elections in which House and Senate control are in play, Democrats tried making sure that female voters were paying attention.

Lee, the lone Republican to hold the floor overnight, defended Kavanaugh and directly rebutted remarks made by Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., said he would be attending his daughter's wedding in Montana on Saturday. "Your experiences, your trauma, your pain, your heartache, your anger - none of that matters". "And that's what I want to share, that we care". "Sit down and be quiet'". "We've heard those voices and I hope we have all learned something, that we owe it to the victims of sexual assault to do more and to do better and to do it now with them". A group of them climbed the Capitol steps, and some were led away by police.

In her speech, Murkowski said she was initially leaning toward supporting Kavanaugh but that the ultimate reason for her vote against the nomination was her concern that Kavanaugh did not possess the temperament to properly represent the Supreme Court. That roll call will end on a contest fought against the backdrop of the #MeToo movement and Trump's unyielding support of his nominee.

Republicans control the Senate by a meager 51-49 margin. The Senate Judiciary Committee says the Federal Bureau of Investigation also interviewed two alleged eyewitnesses to the incident named by Ramirez and one of her college friends.

The Alaska senator expressed dismay at the acrimony in Kavanaugh's confirmation process and said on the Senate floor, "I am really anxious that this becomes the new normal, where we find new and even more creative ways to tear one another down, that good people are just going to say forget".

After Collins' announcement that she is pledging her support, Sen. Manchin faces a competitive re-election race next month in a state Trump carried in 2016 by 42 percentage points.

Manchin faces extraordinary political pressure.

"I do not believe that these charges can fairly prevent Judge Kavanaugh from serving on the court", the senator said on the Senate floor.

Their support makes Saturday's vote to confirm Kavanaugh an apparent formality after a battle that riveted the nation for almost a month. Kavanaugh has denied all the allegations against him. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, were key undecided senators who were closely watched for how they would vote.

Vice President Mike Pence planned to be available Saturday in case his tie-breaking vote was needed, which now seems unlikely.

Republicans control the Senate by a 51-49 margin, and Saturday's roll call vote seemed assured to be almost party-line, with just a single defector from each side. They said he also seemed ready to rule for Trump if federal authorities probing his 2016 campaign's connections to Russian Federation try to pursue him in court.

Kavanaugh was sworn in as a justice Saturday evening in Washington after an extraordinarily fraught nomination that sparked angry protests, nail-biting votes and a national reckoning about sexual assault allegations and who should be believed.
