White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said the two would meet in the Oval Office with news media present.

After President Donald Trump and U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley met in the Oval Office on Tuesday, the president announced that she is leaving the administration at the end of the year.

"I am such a lucky girl to have been able to lead the state that raised me, and to serve a country I love so very much". Trump added that Haley told him she wanted a break around six months ago.

Nikki Haley has resigned as the US ambassador to the United Nations, according to multiple media reports. "What I'm saying is, in the long run, Nikki Haley quitting could save us 8 bucks a month", comedian Michael Ian Black tweeted. "They had a very productive and strong working relationship".

Meanwhile, Haley told reporters she has no plans to run for office in 2020, rejecting speculation that popped up nearly instantly on social media.

Many are speculating as to the reason for Ambassador Haley's resignation as Washington's envoy to the United Nations, but there has been no official reason given to date for the dramatic move. She had scripted history by becoming the first-ever Indian-American to be appointed to a cabinet-level post in any United States administration.

Haley has been an outspoken advocate of Trump's foreign policy. In the role she represented Trump's often unpopular agenda at the UN, advocating a hardline stance on Iran, justifying USA cuts to foreign aid and leading the U.S. withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council.

During Trump's morning White House presser with Haley, Trump thanked her for making the job more "glamorous", which some political navel lint gazers translated as "suitable for Ivanka", having already heard her name as a candidate for the job.

Trump accepted the resignation, Axios news site reported, citing two sources familiar with the matter. Lindsey Graham of SC in a statement after the news broke Tuesday morning. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) wrote on Twitter.

Haley has been a consistent "America First" voice on the global front, calling out United Nations' powers for anti-Israel, anti-West rhetoric.

Haley, 46, was appointed to the U.N. post in November 2016 and last month co-ordinated Trump's second trip to the United Nations, including his first time chairing the Security Council. She's made it a more glamorous position.

She listed hawkish policies to pressure Iran and the Palestinians, and the ground-breaking diplomatic outreach to communist North Korea.
