US President Donald Trump and Saudi Arabia's King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud (R) attend the Arab Islamic American Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, May 21, 2017.

President Donald Trump made a harsh remark about Saudi Arabia which is its close ally, he warned Saudi Arabia's King Salman he would not last in power "for two weeks" without the backing of the USA military. "But I said 'King we're protecting you, you might not be there for two weeks without us - you have to pay for your military".

"How about our military deals where we protect rich nations that we don't get reimbursed?"

The presence of the United States military in Saudi Arabia, home to the two holiest sites in Islam - Mecca and Medina - was strongly objected to by most of the world's Muslim population, according to opinion polls published by Gallup in 2009. "You have to pay for your military, you have to pay'".

A US Senate subcommittee will hear testimony on the No Oil Producing and Exporting Cartels Act or NOPEC, which would revoke OPEC's immunity from US legal action. At the end of September, Trump reportedly called the Saudi King, and although the nature of that conversation was not disclosed, most oil watchers believed that the call was an attempt to pressure the Saudis into increasing oil supply.

The US crude oil price is pausing for breath after its strong advance ahead of US sanctions on Iran, which take effect on November 4.

-Saudi Arabia appears to be bowing again to pressure from Trump.

Trump added that he had spoken to Saudi Arabia's King Salman on Saturday to make the same point, the AFP news agency reported. Since the kingdom rebuffed his calls last month for a rapid production increase to offset the impact of sanctions on Iran, the president has amplified his rhetoric.

Oil prices remain firm on Iran sanctions, with both West Texas Intermediate crude oil, the USA benchmark, and Brent crude, the global benchmark, trading at multiyear highs.

A new report from Reuters says that Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia "struck a private deal" in September to increase production in order to suppress oil prices.
