Jose Mourinho has defended Paul Scholes' right to express an opinion as "freedom of speech" after the Manchester United legend called the current manager "embarrassing".

United turned out another desperately dire performance with a goalless draw in their Champions League clash with Valencia on Tuesday evening with many fans booing at full-time.

Mourinho refused to be drawn into a war of words with former United star Paul Scholes, who blasted the Portuguese pre-match in his role as a TV pundit. "Especially (for) Manchester United fans that I respect 200 percent". Let us know in the comments section below.

Sections of the Old Trafford faithful were far from impressed with this latest performance that failed to yield a serious effort on goal until the 71st minute.

Scholes won some 11 Premier League titles as well as the Champions League twice under Sir Alex Ferguson, including the Treble in 1999. "And I don't say more than that".

The former Chelsea coach is clearly unhappy at the club and has been for some time now and this latest attack from a rival player is only going to crank up the pressure another notch.

"I think there are things that are hard for me to say".

"We have Newcastle before the league stops (for the worldwide break) then we have Chelsea and Juventus in three days".

'We played an important game and got a point, now we have a game against Newcastle and we need to fight.

"He's coming out in press conferences, he's constantly having a go at players".

"At the moment I don't see enough of them really digging deep and saying, "right I am going to take this game by the scruff of the neck, and make something happen".

"I wanted a game like this", said Dybala, who has struggled for form since Ronaldo's arrival and started several games on the bench.
