Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola recalled left-back Benjamin Mendy for his side's top of the table Premier League clash with Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Closer to the victory was the bulls - in the 86th minute to break a 15-year series of man city without a win in Liverpool could of Riyadh Mahrez, however, the Algerian penalty sent the ball over the crossbar.

Guardiola did not blame Mahrez for missing the penalty - which was blazed high above the bar - but did apologise to Gabriel Jesus for not allowing him to take it.

"During the training sessions I see him taking the penalties and it gave me a lot of confidence", the Manchester City manager said. We played so well so if you want to analyse the result it was okay.

"But that would mean I forget completely how we played three days before against Chelsea, so we have to stay cool. It was really intense and both showed respect for the other team", he said.

"It's better than last season when we lost here".

"If it's up and down quickly they are much, much better-they are maybe the best team in the world running these transitions, offensive-defensively". Liverpool winger Salah has made a more modest start to 2018-19, certainly in comparison to last season's 44-goal campaign, with just three goals to date. They remain on five points, one place above the relegation zone.

"It is a very intense, unbelievable challenge to face Manchester City always - I've said that before - and as the last game of an hard period, it makes the challenge even bigger, so I am really happy with what the boys did", Klopp said. Don't lose the ball in unsafe positions because when you lose the ball there they counterattack with [Roberto] Firmino, [Sadio] Mané and [Mohamed] Salah. Klopp's liverpool looked nervous throughout the game, with Salah, Mane and Firmino all off the pace.

"Riyad feels deflated, he feels he has let us down", he said.

For a side aiming to win the Premier League, goals from midfield is a necessity. They also dropped deeper as a back four to deny Liverpool's front three the space to get in behind them and it worked a treat.

The Merseyside outfit came from behind to rescue a 1-1 draw with Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge last weekend after former Manchester City striker Sturridge netted a late equaliser. "I don't know because we haven't spoken about it". They can play a defence-splitting pass for the attackers to run in behind, they can make well-timed forward runs to create a 1v1 situation for the forwards or they can simply dribble with the ball on their own and pull defenders out of position.

"We were up for it and we wanted to bounce back from our defeat against Napoli".
