  • United States First Lady Melania Trump is expected in Kenya on Friday as part of her first solo international trip as FLOTUS

The U.S. first lady visited Nairobi National Park to learn about steps the east African nation is taking to conserve elephants and rhinos and participated in a baby elephant feeding.

Melania Trump may have gotten a little too close to the wildlife on her Africa trip.

"I wanted to be here to see the successful programs that (the) United States is providing the children and thank you for everything you've done", the US first lady said at the book donation ceremony, held inside the school's library.

Melania's visit, which started in Ghana and will continue on to Kenya and Egypt, has so far attracted varied interest levels in Africa with few crowds lining streets to see her.

Asked about reports earlier this year that her husband President Donald Trump referred to African nations and Haiti as "shithole countries", the First Lady said "nobody discussed that with me and I never heard him saying those comments".

Llamas, who is weekend anchor of "World News Tonight", is among the reporters following the first lady on her first solo overseas trip.

"No child in this country is without a book", Malawi's Education Minister Bright Msaka told the first lady.

Following the school visit, Mrs. Trump met with Ambassador Virginia Palmer and the Embassy staff, thanking them for their service on behalf of the United States and their continued efforts in Malawi.

The first lady landed in the capital of Lilongwe on Thursday morning after a six-hour flight from Ghana.

First Lady Margaret Kenyatta welcomes US First Lady Melania Trump at JKIA on October 04, 2018.

"I was heartened to spend time with the students and was honoured to donate school supplies and soccer balls". A group of children who live at the orphanage and had been waiting for their American visitor broke into song and dance.

"When people think of Africa, they have these standard narratives", Dionne said.

But on social media, the angry tweets and hashtags about the helmet rolled in: #FLOTUSinAfricaBingo documented what some felt were Trump's tone-deaf fashion choices.

"Do you see the cameras?" she said to the boy before cradling another baby.
