  • Microsoft Project xCloud Game Streaming Service Announced

Microsoft today revealed Project xCloud, a game streaming service that would bring the company's games to multiple devices, including mobile.

Microsoft has announced that it has developed custom hardware in its data centers to ensure the xCloud service is compatible with all existing - and future!

Public Project xCloud system testing is set to begin next year, but ultimately, Microsoft's plan is to upload any Xbox and Windows game into the cloud, then have it streamable to mobile devices.

Before the public test next year, Microsoft is now testing Project xCloud on phones and tablets internally.

The service will compete with Google's "Project Stream", a game streaming service that is being tested by the Alphabet Inc unit in partnership with game publisher Ubisoft.

The idea behind Project xCloud is to make it possible for people to play games on demand with anyone, on any device-regardless of whether it's a PC, console, or smartphone. The test now runs at 10 megabits per second; Project xCloud can push the limits of 4G technology while being fully scalable for the upcoming 5G technology.

The company said Project xCloud relies on a new customizable blade "that can host the component parts of multiple Xbox One consoles, as well as the associated infrastructure supporting it". To that end, the company is also working on game-specific touch controls for those who prefer them. Microsoft claims it has a grip on this latency issue and is confident that it can create a game streaming service which will allow users to play anything they want on any device they choose. Today, Microsoft let the world know about yet another piece of their online gaming puzzle - Project xCloud.

But cloud gaming has not enjoyed as much success as other applications have in moving to the cloud. In a post on the Official Microsoft Blog, Kareem Choudhry, Corporate Vice President of Cloud Gaming said the following.

'Currently, the test experience is running at 10 megabits per second. Delivering a high-quality experience across a variety of devices must account for different obstacles, such as low-latency video streamed remotely, and support a large, multi-user network.
