Nationwide road safety warning issued ahead of Storm Callum

  • UK Weather: Met Office Issues Yellow Rain Warnings As Storm Callum Approaches

The main impacts for the United Kingdom will be from heavy rain across some western areas on Friday and Saturday.

There are still yellow alerts in place for wind and rain for Northern England and large swathes of England and Scotland.

The storm is expected to bring heavy rain between 6am on Friday and 6pm on Saturday, particularly over south-facing hills.

Arriva is also cancelling services between Llandudno Junction and Blaenau Ffestiniog on both Friday and Saturday.

The Met Office has warned that homes and offices are likely to be flooded, with fast flowing or deep floodwater which could cause a danger to life.

A warning for Dublin, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow, Meath, Cork and Waterford is in place from 10pm on Thursday until 9am on Friday.

"Netweather Forecaster Jo Farrow said" Storm Callum is expected to bring very strong winds to western Britain and Northern Ireland during Friday morning, lasting for NW Scotland into the afternoon. Quite widely 40 - 80mm rainfall is possible, but locally 160mm could fall on the highest ground.

Meanwhile, Met Eireann has issued an orange warning for gale-force winds of up to 80mph for all the coastal counties in the Republic of Ireland on Thursday and Friday.

The Met Office said there will be strong winds and rainfall up to 10cm, leading to possible flooding and hard driving conditions.

On Tuesday, heavy rain caused widespread floods and landslides in parts of Scotland. "Road users should also be aware of the risk of their vehicles aquaplaning on standing water".

While it appears that the west and north west may experience the worst of the storm, motorists nationwide are advised that driving conditions could worsen significantly across the next 48 hours.

"Widespread flooding from surface water and rivers is possible across south Wales on Friday and Saturday, and is possible but not now expected elsewhere in Wales and parts of north-west England".

"There is the also the risk of coastal flooding due to high tides and surge".
