Protesters, Everest light up Opera House

  • The Chaser project new ad onto Opera House as Jones apologises for Louise Herron interview

Nevertheless, despite the torchlight, the results of the barrier draw were clearly visible, with short-priced runner and previous champion Redzel securing the prized inside barrier, closest to the rail, and bookmakers having resumed taking bets.

The protesters gathered on the stairs and along the boardwalk around 7.30pm, chanting "shame on you" as they used torches and mobile phone lights to disrupt the 6-minute projection of the Everest horse race contenders.

The New South Wales state government triggered a public backlash last week when it overturned a decision by the Opera House's chief executive, Louise Herron, not to allow the World Heritage-listed building to be used to promote such a commercial event.

As a result, betting for The Everest was suspended until the results of the draw were beamed onto the shells of Sydney Opera House on Tuesday night.

They later also targeted broadcaster Alan Jones' luxury Circular Quay apartment with the lights. "We have to fight to stop more of this appalling advertising".

Luckily for Jones, as it turns out, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian is a gutless Jones puppet can caved in immediately, overturning the actual documented rules of the Sydney Opera House so that Jones' pals could get their way.

The apology comes as the Change-org petition pushing support for Herron and for the Opera House to remain "billboard free" now has more than 235,000 signatures and was delivered to NSW state parliament this morning.

A protest is being planned for when the projection takes place, at 8pm on Tuesday night.

Here's a look at the protest at the Opera House on Tuesday evening.

In the letter, Heritage Council chair Stephen Davies said the decision goes against existing management policy and may impact the UNESCO expectation for World Heritage sites.

"The Opera House guidelines have from time to time been amended, whether it's for other sporting events or other causes".

Mr Quint said the government still hadn't explained how projecting advertising onto the sails adhered to the exemptions.
