Seattle’s minimum wage goes up to $16 an hour in January

U.S. Democratic Senator and prominent Amazon critic Bernie Sanders praised the company's move to increase minimum hourly wages to $15 on Tuesday and said other companies should follow its lead. Only one state - Washington - had a minimum wage above $8 an hour.

Today, in separate statements in the USA and Britain, Amazon said it was increasing its minimum wage for all employees - including agency and temporary staff - with effect from 1 November.

"It was clear to us that the $7.25 was too low for the federal minimum wage, and so we made a decision to throw our support behind increasing that", Clark said.

Utah House Minority Leader Brian King, D-Salt Lake City, ran into opposition for a legislative proposal in the last session aimed at moving the state's minimum wage, in increments, from its current federally mandated $7.25 per hour to $12 per hour by 2022.

Here's the percentage of hourly paid workers in each state who earned the federal minimum wage or less in 2017, according to the BLS' report.

Amazon, which became the second company after Apple to cross $US1 trillion in market value last month, now pays around $US11 per hour. Employees at Whole Foods, which Amazon now owns, will get the same pay hike.

The Obama administration had called for raising the minimum wage to $10.10, but the proposal went nowhere during an era of divided government. Among the most likely to do so: Amazon's rival retailers and warehouse operators, many of which are facing the prospect of staff shortages as they ramp up for the holiday shopping season.

"Given that $15 per hour represents a fairly significant boost above what we were initially expecting, $12.50 an hour, we should see more money filtering through the economy for household spending and additional economic growth", Tennert said. One of its harshest critics is Vermont Sen. His Twitter account, which has almost 9 million followers, frequently points out the disparity between Amazon's median employee pay and the vast fortune of CEO Jeff Bezos.

It will have repercussions beyond retailers and will put pressure on any company that operates a distribution center, said Gerald Storch of the retail consulting firm Storch Advisors.

Last month, Sanders introduced the "Stop BEZOS Act", which would have required large employers like Amazon to pay taxes on workers receiving federal assistance. At the same time, Storch said, the wage increase will widen the gap between the healthy retailers, such as Amazon, Walmart and Target, and the struggling ones, which won't be able to afford to compete on salary.

While it's unclear if Amazon's move was a direct response to the introduction of the bill, the raise means Amazon would no longer be subject to it - companies that pay at least US$15 per hour or more are not affected. "They are in a very tough place".

Amazon shares were flat in trading Tuesday, but are up more than 65 percent so far this year.

The last hiring figures from the U.S. Commerce Department showed that in August, the pace of hiring rose again and wages grew at their fastest pace in nine years.

But it shares one potential hurdle that is growing higher for nearly all employers: a tightening labor market. Amazon's pay varies by location, so the increase could be between $3 and $5 an hour, depending on the state. The move comes amid a national push from the labor-backed Fight for $15 movement to raise the minimum wage nationwide.

"This is about ensuring we retain, hire, and develop the best talent in the world", he said.
