SpaceX launch and landing in California

The Air Force is warning residents on California's central coast to be prepared for unusual sights and sounds this weekend as SpaceX attempts its first return of a rocket to launch site on the West Coast.

The California-based aerospace manufacturing company founded by Elon Musk launched its Falcon 9 rocket Sunday evening.

CONAE was one of the company's first customers, signing up for two Falcon 9 launches back when SpaceX had only flown the smaller Falcon 1 vehicle.

SpaceX said it will launch a satellite on a Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg.

SpaceX has a goal of using the boosters up to ten times with little maintenance, and 100 with refurbishment, as well as being able to relaunch boosters 24 hours after landing.

If the mission goes according to plan, Sunday night will mark SpaceX's first landing of this sort on the West Coast.

Land landings aren't threatened by storms like ocean landings are, and they also allow SpaceX to refurbish the boosters faster, as they don't need to be recovered from sea. There's no specified launch window, and that could force SpaceX to move liftoff to October 11th if it has to scrub the launch on the 7th. SpaceX has several other missions planned for this year, including the Falcon 9 launches of another 10 Iridium Next satellites, Es'hailSat's Es'hail-2, and the U.S. Air Force's first GPS-3 satellite. It carries a high-resolution instrument called a synthetic aperature radar that will be used for emergency management and land monitoring.

Two minutes later, the second stage engine shut down as planned and two-and-a-half minutes after that, the SAOCOM 1A satellite was released into the planned polar orbit. The satellite is created to provide radar imagery to help emergency responders and monitor the environment, including the collection of soil moisture measurements. Its name is short for Satelite Argentino de Observacion Con Microondas.
