The mysterious case of the missing Saudi journalist

  • Turkey believes journalist killed in Saudi consulate

Jamal Khashoggi, a prominent critic of the Riyadh regime, has not been seen since he entered Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul last Tuesday and Turkish authorities claim he was killed inside the building.

The state-run Saudi Press Agency, quoting an unnamed official at the Istanbul consulate, denied the reports of Khashoggi's murder.

Turkish police believe Khashoggi was killed by a team of assassins who were sent to Istanbul and departed the same day, according to a Turkish government source.

Two days before entering the Saudi consulate in Turkey, Jamal Khashoggi appeared at Middle East Monitor's conference on the legacy of the Oslo Accords in London.

"I have raised Jamal's disappearance personally with the Saudi ambassador, and while we await more information, know we will respond accordingly to any state that targets journalists overseas", he wrote.

"The worrying trend that we see is a crackdown on critical and independent journalism in Saudi and about Saudi", Robert Mahoney, Deputy Executive Director of CPJ, told CBS News' Pamela Falk.

The US president told reporters Tuesday he knew nothing about Khashoggi's fate.

Private broadcaster NTV reported on October 9 that all suspects were seen entering the consulate half an hour before Khashoggi and leaving it after nearly three hours. Erdogan has said he would await the results of an investigation.

Khashoggi, a former Saudi government adviser, had been living in self-imposed exile in the United States since past year fearing possible arrest.

Saudi authorities continue to insist they played no role in Khashoggi's disappearance.

Turkey has asked for permission to search Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul, broadcaster NTV said on Monday.

The Khashoggi family confirmed that they are coordinating with the Saudi government to learn about the latest developments in the case.

On Tuesday he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to get documents for his forthcoming marriage. "I don't know who is behind these claims, or their intentions", he said, "nor do I care frankly".

Last year, Khashoggi left Saudi Arabia in fear of retribution, and he's been living in self-imposed exile in the U.S. A former Muslim Brotherhood member who befriended Osama bin Laden but later condemned his violence, Khashoggi became a leading proponent for Arab reform-some of the same reforms, in fact, that MBS has spearheaded as part of his Vision 2030 campaign for the kingdom.

Meanwhile, Turkish authorities are scouring motorway camera footage in the hopes of finding a black van they suspect carried Khashoggi's body out of the consulate.

In an interview with Russia Today, the adviser to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey was not accusing the Kingdom in Khashoggi's disappearance, hinting at the possibility of a conspiracy to drive a wedge between Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

"Hopefully that will sort itself out", he added.

The US has begun its own diplomatic throat-clearing on Khashoggi.

"Our country's values should be and must be a cornerstone of our foreign policy with foes and allies alike", he said.

She said Mr Khashoggi was required to surrender his mobile phone, which is standard practice in some diplomatic missions.

"I don't call myself an opposition: I always say I'm just a writer, I want a free environment to write and speak my mind and that's what I do in the Washington Post".

Khashoggi was one journalist who chose to "report the reality".
