Trump claims Kavanaugh allegations are 'Democrat hoax' in new attack

  • Protesters against US Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh demonstrate at the high court in Washington ahead of his confirmation

"I've been hearing that they're now thinking of impeaching a brilliant jurist - a man that did nothing wrong, a man that was caught up in a hoax that was set up by the Democrats", Trump told reporters on the South Lawn before departing for a police convention in Orlando.

Mr Kavanaugh was accused by several women of sexual misconduct, including a California professor who testified under oath that he tried to assault her at a high school party decades ago. He emphatically denied the allegations.

Mr Trump said every notion of fairness and decency had been broken, and berated the "the bad suffering" the judge had been forced to endure, adding that "under historic scrutiny", he had been "proven innocent".

An NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll released Wednesday indicated that the battle over Kavanaugh's nomination had helped Republicans close the enthusiasm gap with Democrats, who are energized by Trump's surprise win in 2016. "I'm glad that Judge Kavanaugh was heard, FBI investigation was done, is completed and the Senate voted".

Susan Collins and her ilk knew the tactics they used to malign Anita Hill wouldn't work, so instead of calling Dr. Ford a liar, they all agreed to say she was a victim, but too dumb or hysterical to know who her perpetrator was. "If an opening comes in the past year of President Trump's term, and the primary process has started, we'll wait till the next election", Graham said during an appearance at the Atlantic Festival in Washington.

Justice Kavanaugh also faces more than a dozen judicial misconduct complaints over his public statements as a nominee to the Supreme Court. Protests grew following numerous allegations against the judge regarding sexual assault as well as evidence that he committed perjury during his confirmation hearings and a partisan tirade in which he claimed "the left" orchestrated the allegations and threatened, "What goes around comes around".

Collins, one of the few pro-choice Republicans in the Senate, has asserted that Kavanaugh considers Roe v. Wade "settled law" and would not vote to overturn that 1973 decision.

When asked if she believed Ford's claim that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were teenagers, Trump did not address the question directly.

The entire room of Trump supporters and staff applauded the entire Kavanaugh family.

President Trump talks to reporters as he departs the White House in Washington on Monday.

Trump apologized to Kavanaugh and his family for "the bad suffering you have been forced to endure".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court was like an "adrenaline shot" for Republican candidates in a midterm election cycle that has been characterized by sluggishness among their base of voters.

Trump is scheduled to return for a ceremonial swearing-in of Kavanaugh at the White House.

Trump said the ceremony would be "very special" and a "big night".
