United States working with Turkey, Saudi Arabia on journalist probe: Donald Trump

  • The image taken from Turkey's Daily Sabah shows 15 Saudi operatives suspected of having killed Kamal Khashoggi upon his arrival at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul

Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), and Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) sent a letter to Trump demanding that the USA impose sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act on any "foreign person responsible for such a violation related to Mr. Khashoggi".

The footage shows some of the Saudis leaving a hotel and Khashoggi entering the consulate, walking past a black Mercedes van with diplomatic plates parked adjacent to the entrance.

Earlier, the Washington Post reported that United States intelligence intercepts outlined a Saudi plan to detain Khashoggi. "We can't let it happen". To reporters, to anybody.

"I would say they're excellent", said Trump before going on a tangent.

"We're demanding everything", Trump told reporters.

Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, has been the Trump administration's point person on Saudi Arabia.

It is said some of the men went into the Saudi consulate before Mr Khashoggi. "And we're being very tough and we have investigators over there and we're working with Turkey and frankly we're working with Saudi Arabia", Trump said in an interview with "Fox and Friends". "We don't like it and we're going to get to the bottom", he added.

"I've never heard of an embassy in my life that doesn't tape", he said.

Saudi royal guards, intelligence officers, soldiers and an autopsy expert were part of a 15-member team from the kingdom that targeted missing writer Jamal Khashoggi, Turkish media said Thursday.

Khashoggi had left his phones with her before entering and told her to wait outside and alert the authorities if he did not return.

Trump said "it would be a very sad thing" if Khashoggi has been killed and would set a "terrible, bad precedent".

Turkish officials believe Khashoggi, a USA resident whose writings for the Washington Post were often critical of the crown prince, was killed by a team of assassins who arrived in Turkey from Saudi Arabia the same day he vanished.

'Secretary of State Mike Pompeo then had a follow up call with the Crown Prince to reiterate the United States request for information.

A day earlier, more than two dozen US Democratic and Republican senators, including Corker, invoked a human rights law to demand that Trump formally investigate Khashoggi's disappearance.

"What was explained to us is this: He was killed, make your funeral preparations", Kislakci said. "They're going to take that money and spend it in Russian Federation or China or someplace else", Trump said. Erdogan asked. "If a bird flew, if a mosquito appeared, these systems would catch them and (I believe) they (the Saudis) would have the most advanced of systems".

He said that "there was Saudi involvement" in whatever happened with the journalist, who wrote columns for The Washington Post. "But in failing to call MBS out on just about anything, particularly repression at home, Trump Administration has emboldened him and given him [the] sense he can do anything".

As CBS News correspondent Holly Williams reports, a U.S. State Department spokesperson has denied the U.S. had any prior knowledge of a plot against Khashoggi.

Khashoggi, who lived in the U.S.in exile and whose children are US citizens, disappeared during a visit to the Saudi consulate in Istambul Oct. 2. They said at the weekend they believed Mr Khashoggi was killed by a team sent to Istanbul and thought to consist of 15 Saudis.

The journalist went missing after visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

He further stressed that he wants to end arms exports if there's "any indication" the Saudis are "implicated in killing this journalist that was critical of them". The video ends with shots of two private jets, saying that six men left at 5:40 p.m. and seven left at 9 p.m.

Erdogan told reporters on a flight back from Hungary that Turkey is anxious about the Khashoggi's disappearance. Khashoggi has been a contributor to the Post's Global Opinions section.
