Kansai International Airport in Osaka in western Japan said it had opened its runways as scheduled at 6 a.m. (2100 GMT Sunday), after being closed since 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Outlying islands in the Okinawan chain, some 1,000 km (621 miles) southwest of Tokyo, were being pounded by heavy rain and high tides a day before an Okinawan gubernatorial election on Sunday.

Huge crowds built up at Tokyo train stations, people battling for spots in jam-packed commuter trains.

The Yomiuri ShimbunAn extremely powerful typhoon was expected to bring violent winds and stormy weather to an extensive area stretching from western to northern Japan on Monday.

Railway companies and airlines canceled services in central, eastern and western Japan.

Television footage showed branches ripped from trees by strong winds blocking a main street in Naha, with massive waves splashing on breakwaters on a remote island in the region and torrential horizontal rain. Several houses were flooded or damaged and 38 people sustained minor injuries but no one was feared dead, local officials said.

The storm's strength prompted rail authorities to take the highly unusual step of cancelling Sunday night train services in Tokyo, one of the world's busiest networks.

The airport also was closed for the latest typhoon.

Trami will threaten lives and property as it slams the Ryukyu Islands and mainland Japan with destructive winds, flooding rain and an inundating storm surge. The airport only fully reopened on September 21 following previous storms.

More than 185,000 homes and offices had power outages as of 9 p.m. on Sunday in the southern Kyushu region, according to Kyushu Electric Power Co., while about 118,000 buildings were without power in Okinawa as of 9:50 p.m. according to Okinawa Electric Power Co.

At least 51 people were injured in southern Japan. Some Tokyo train lines stopped running even before 8 p.m. Sunday, with the central Tokyo Yamanote loop line and others halting at 8 p.m., according to notices on the East Japan Railway website.

The airport had only fully reopened on September 21 after being heavily flooded earlier that month by Typhoon Jebi, the most powerful storm to hit Japan in 25 years.

And last month, a magnitude-6.6 quake rocked the northern island of Hokkaido, sparking landslides and killing more than 40 people.
