Favorite songs of 2015

Here is a collection of some of my favorite songs of 2015, in no particular order.

For whatever the reason, my tastes drifted more towards pop than alternative.

RUN: OK, so I had to cheat a little on this list and look at Alt Nation’s top 36 songs of the year. I’m glad I did, because it was a great reminder of this little gem. I always liked it, but always missed out on the title, which is why I didn’t remember. Well, at least that’s my excuse.

MY TYPE: This was one of my favorites during the first half of the year, and the biggest ear worm through spring. As people know, I’m a sucker for great horns.

WON’T GO BACK: The Wild and Crazy Guy with the lead singer of New Boheemians sounds like such a weird combination, but it turns out to be really fantastic. But this was their second CD together, so I’m late to this wonderful combination.

SUGAR: One of my college friends turned me onto this song long over its peak. I love the video, where they crashed all these weddings. And the song is hard to shake once you hear it.

SISTER OF PEARL: I’m amused by the band’s name, because it remind me of Chachi from “Happy Days” and “Joanie Loves Chachi.” But this is a really great song with a fun opening. I hadn’t liked a lot of new music this year from new groups, but Baio is the exception.

LIFTED UP (1985): I’ve become a huge fan of Passion Pit, and I really thought this would be an even bigger hit than it was. I mean, there was a lot of looking back to 1985, partly with “Back to the Future,” and I figured people would use it to promote their 30th reunions. OK, I hear it too, I sound really old. I’ll stop, but this is a really great song.

I WILL LOVE YOU: Caught Gin Wigmore at the Troubadour for the end of the American swing of her tour. She ended her show with this song that is both raw, powerful and haunting. I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

SHUT UP AND DANCE: This has become a monster hit for Walk The Moon, and become the anthem for all dance numbers and videos. It’s an infectious song that will have you hooked immediately.

T-SHIRT WEATHER: The perfect song for summer. Circa Waves is part of a Waves wave this year. While the Waves  had bigger hits, I thought this was perfect for the beach.

AMERICA’S SWEETHEART: X’s and O’s is Elle King’s biggest hit of the year, but I have an affinity for this song, which is weird because I don’t usually like country and this definitely has a country vibe to it.

SHIP TO WRECK: The second single from Florence + The Machine is enchanting and infectious. My first time hearing the song was at Coachella, and it was addicting. It’s a personal song about when she trashed her house during a lost weekend. Irresistible.

This performance on Ellen recreates the fact that her water pipes burst in house that weekend.
