Joel Diaz on his latest prospects and career at Fantasy Springs

Joel Diaz has worked with some of the best boxers in the game and has built up a reputation as one of the top trainers in the sport.

On Friday, May 20th, Diaz will have two young prospects at the start of their careers in Joseph Aguirre and Jesus Sanchez. They are part of the Golden Boy Promotions card at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino Spa.

Diaz has spent less than a year with both fighters, but likes what he sees so far.

Aguirre (12-0, 8 knockouts) will be with Diaz for just his second fight as he fights Rony Alvarado (9-7, 5 KOs) from Mexico.

While in Cancun for another fight, the promoter approached Diaz to see if he would want to take on Aguirre. The promoter, Pepe Gomez, felt Aguirre needed a change.

In his first fight with Diaz in March, Aguirre won by second-round knockout. This will be Aguirre’s first fight in the US, Diaz said.

Sanchez won his debut by second-round knockout in February. From Madera, Calif., Sanchez moved south to Indio, Calif., so he could train with Diaz.

So far, Diaz likes what he sees with Sanchez’s toughness and work ethic. Although lanky at 6-foot-2 in the 140-pound division, Diaz said Sanchez does have good power.

Sanchez takes on Cuban Livan Navarro (2-0), who has a lot of experience, Diaz said.

Although Diaz has trained some of the elite boxers in the game today, and traveled the world, he said fights at Fantasy Springs will always have a special place in his heart.

When Diaz was a top boxer, he fought several times locally, and Fantasy Springs became the destination in the Coachella Valley. Diaz and his younger brothers Antonio and Julio became legends locally. All three fighters combined never lost a fight at Fantasy Springs.
